Completed Projects 2008/09
The parent council were involved in a number of varied projects, and full details can be found in the Parent Council meeting minutes on this website. A summary of each project is given below:
Healthy Eating & Well-being. There have been a number of actions on this subject. Each class selected a Health and Well-being representative to attend regular meetings and feed back to their class. Each pupil was also asked to design a poster and the best from each year were displayed in the school corridors. The Parent Council also supported Kirsty McNeil in setting up the cooking club for P6. This has been a great success and some pupils were involved in giving a cooking demonstration at the East Renfrewshire food fair in September.
Sports Day. Members of the Parent Council and PTA organised the sports and gala day in June 08. This was a great success, being well supported by both the number of pupils taking part in events and the number of parents offering help.
75th Anniversary. The Parent Council collected and displayed artifacts, photos and memories at the Open Evening in May 08. In December 2008 the Parent Council produced a booklet featuring some of these which was circulated to pupils and to local churchs, libraries Etc.This was funded by advertising from local businesses, which members of the Parent Council secured. This booklet will shortly be available to view on this website.
Journalism Club. This is an on-going project which aims to establish an after school journalism club for P7. 18 "Quark Express" licenses to be used in this club have been purchased by the school, and the set up of the club will continue in the 2009/10 session.
More curriculum information for parents to be available, with special emphasis on maths. Sandra Mitchell has incorporated this into the school's Operational Plan. The Parent Council will continue to support the school in the delivery of this plan. In December 2008, Bryan McLaughlin, who was maths co-ordinator of the school at that time, spoke at the Parent Council meeting. He outlined the "Curriculum for Excellence" requirements regarding maths teaching and a discussion took place on how parents could be given more information on the techniques and terminology used to teach maths so they could provide more support for their children.
Plannned new doctor's surgery near to the playpark by Netherlee pavillion. In Feb 2008 the Parent Council noted that the land transfer and outline planning consent had been approved at Scottish Excutive level. However, as it was possible to make objections to specific items in the detailed application, the Parent Council, together with the Local Residents Association awaited the planning application for implications on traffic safety, school fencing, and the reduced size of the children's playpark. It now appears that the project is on hold due to either undermining or funding issues. The Parent Council will continue to monitor the position.
Persuading the local authority to stop using the school as a polling station. ERC refused to to stop using the school as a polling station despite the volume of responses from parents in support of the Parent Council's position. The PC was not convinced by the arguments put forward by ERC that there is no suitable alternative venue. The PC remains attracted by the idea of using Netherlee Pavillion which, it believes, is of a similar size to the school atrium and offers similar facilities in terms of car parking and disabled access. However, ERC has refused to consider other venues and on the advice of the Headteacher, the PC has resolved to leave the matter for the time being.
